1899 Birth of Evsa Model.
1900 Birth of Salvator Stern.
1901 Birth of Elise Amélie Félicie (Lisette) Stern in Vienna, daughter of Françoise Antoinette Félicie and Victor Stern.
1903 Victor Stern changes surname to Seybert to avoid rising anti-Semitism in Austria.
1909 birth of Olga Seybert.
1918 Lisette takes piano lessons with Edouard Steuemann.
1920 Lisette studies music with Arnold Shönberg.
1924 Victor Seybert dies at age 58.
1926 Félicie, Lisette and Olga leave Vienna for Paris and Nice; Lisette begins singing lessons with Marya Freund.
1933-34 Lisette abandons singing and music and discovers photography through her sister and her friend Rogi André. She photographs close friends and Paris street scenes.
1934 Lisette decides to become a professional photographer and starts her series of photographs of people along the Promenade des Anglais, Nice. Meets Evsa Model.
1935 Images from her Promenade des Anglais series are published in Regards.
1937 Lisette undertakes a short apprenticeship with Florence Henri. Marries Evsa Model in Paris.
1938 Evsa and Lisette arrive in New York.
1939 Lisette photographs the streets of New York.
1940 Lisette meets Beaumont Newhall and Ansel Adams. First works purchased by the Museum of Modern Art. She starts working on her most renowned series: Reflections, Running Legs, Shadows, Lower East Side, Sammy's, Nick's, Gallagher's, Murray Hill Hotel, Circus, etc.
1941 First personnel exhibition at the Photo League. Publishes Why France Fell in PM's Weekly and begins photo collaboration with Harper's Bazaar.
1943 Lisette meets Edward Steichen. Eight of her photographs figure in the opening exhibition in the Photography Center of the MOMA.
1944 Her brother and sister-in-law are deported from France to Germany.
1945 Lisette photographs the window displays that render homage to the late President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
1946 Lisette exposes her work in an exhibition at the MOMA. Evsa and Lisette in San Francisco where they get in touch with the artistic community.
1948 Official confirmation of the death of Lisette's brother Salvator in a concentration camp. Group exhibition at the MOMA: Lisette Model, Harry Callahan, Ted Croner and Bill Brandt.
1949 Lisette applies for a Guggenheim fellowship. Beaumont Newhall's The History of Photography is published which includes one photograph by Model. The MOMA organises a travelling exhibition and includes fifteen of her prints. Takes photographic excursions with Ansel Adams around San Francisco.
1950 Lisette suffers from health problems. Evsa and Lisette take private classes with Sid Grossman. Participates in MOMA symposium, organised by Edward Steichen, around the theme “What is modern photography?”
1951 Begins teaching at the New School for Social Research.
1952 Conceives the idea of publishing a book of photographs of jazz musicians. The book is never completed due to lack of funds.
1953 Travels to France and Italy. Neighbours are questioned about Model's activities as part of Senator McCarthy's witch-hunt for Communists.
1954 Lisette leaves for Venezuela to engage a variety of photo projects.
1955 End of work for Harper's Bazaar.
1957 Diane Arbus begins classes with Lisette.
1959 Photographs of Billie Holiday in her coffin.
1962 Lisette recommends Diane Arbus for a Guggenheim Fellowship (received in 1963).
1964 Model applies a second time for a Guggenheim Fellowship.
1965 Participates in a collective travelling exhibition of ten American photographers. Awarded Guggenheim Fellowship ($ 5000) on the theme Glamour.
1966 Trip to Los Angeles and Las Vegas for Glamour project.
1967 Participates in the project Alexey Brodovitch's Design Laboratory. Trip to Italy interrupted for health reasons.
1968 Awarded honorary membership in the American Association of Magazine Photographers.
1970 Awarded $ 2000 over two-year period from the Ingram Merrill Foundation.
1973 Receives Creative Artists Public Service Program award for $ 2500. Teaches summer workshop in Berkeley, CA.
1974 Begins publication of portfolio of twelve photographs with Harry Lunn of Graphics International.
1975 Lisette meets Gerd Sander.
1976 Death of Evsa Model.
1977 Graphics International portfolio published leading to more offers. Works exhibited along with Diane Arbus and Rosalind Salomon at the Zabriskie Gallery in Paris. Twenty-four of her photographs are reproduced in Camera: Lisette Model special issue devoted to her life and work.
1978 Exhibition at the MOMA and at the National Gallery of Canada. Participates in the Rencontres Internationales in Arles. Exhibition at the Lunn Gallery in Washington. Lectures at ICP in New York.
1980 Exhibits in Germany, Japan, Canada, Italy, Holland.
1981 Exhibitions in Germany and Paris. Retrospective at the New Orleans Museum.
1982 Trip to France and Germany. Retrospective at the Museum Folkwang, Essen. Receives the medal of the City of Paris.
1983 Exhibition with Weegee and Diane Arbus at the Comfort Gallery. Lisette Model dies at the New York Hospital, age 82. Exhibition at the Sander Gallery, New York.
1990-92 Major retrospective exhibition in Canada, U.S.A. and Germany. Ann Thomas writes the first comprehensive study of Lisette Model's life and work.
